Campaign Kicks-Off in
National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM) is an annual campaign celebrated worldwide in October with the primary objective of promoting cybersecurity awareness and education. Established in 2004 by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), NCSAM has evolved into a global cybersecurity initiative, gaining participation from government agencies, private sector organizations, educational institutions, and individuals worldwide. The central theme of NCSAM revolves around raising awareness about cybersecurity threats and empowering individuals and organizations to take proactive measures to protect their digital assets. With cyber threats becoming increasingly sophisticated and prevalent, NCSAM aims to equip the public with the knowledge and practical skills needed to stay safe and secure in the digital realm.
Last year, CYSED successfully organized street rallies, online campaigns, awareness programs in schools, churches, mosques, organizations, TV, and radio stations, and workshops for MDAs and SMEs reaching millions of people within and outside Nigeria. Building on this success, CYSED aims to implement a more structured, strategic and comprehensive campaign in 2024. This campaign will educate various demographics on the latest cybersecurity threats and best practices, while also promoting awareness of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023 and the Cybercrimes (Prevention, Prohibition, etc.) (Amendment) Act 2024.
NCSAM 2024, organized by CYSED, will feature diverse activities including a national cybersecurity challenge, a national cybersecurity rally, online cybersecurity awareness campaigns, a launch of a cybersecurity guide for young adults and a sensitization seminar where stakeholders from academia, government, business, and the general public can attend. Our focus will be on cybersecurity awareness and cybercrime prevention among the youth and indirectly impacting the general public.

The theme for CYSED’s NCSAM 2024 “Sabi Cyber: Building a Secure Digital Future” underscores the critical importance of establishing a secure and safe digital environment for all users, particularly the youth. This theme highlights the necessity of proactive measures and education to ensure the next generation is well-equipped to navigate and protect themselves in the digital world.
The primary focus of CYSED’s NCSAM 2024 initiative is on youth and young adults. Indirectly, it targets parents and guardians to educate them on online safety, business corporations to design privacy-protecting solutions, and government agencies to collaborate on awareness programs. It also includes community organizations, NGOs, law enforcement, and cybersecurity professionals for collective responsibility and best practices. The general public, including all internet users, is vital for widespread understanding and safe behaviour. Media and influencers are leveraged to amplify the campaign’s reach and raise awareness on a large scale.
